How to Choose the Right Kennel for Your Dog

Dog Boarding in Cumming, GA.

When you leave your dog in boarding kennels it can often be a leap of faith that he’s in good hands.   Knowing your pet is well taken care of can mean the difference between a great vacation and one filled with nagging stress.

5 tips to know before boarding your dog will help you make sure you pick the right place for your dog to stay while you’re away.

  1. Is the kennel clean – Kennels must be cleaned and sanitized daily, at minimum, to ensure they are safe for dogs.
  2. Do they have access to a vet 24/7 – Even if minimal, there’s always a risk that dogs may become sick while boarding.
  3. Do they have a vaccination policy – Not all dog boarding facilities require proof of vaccination, though it’s best to select a dog boarding kennel that does require documentation of your pet’s most recent records from the veterinarian.
  4. Do they have spacious accommodations – A reputable kennel will take steps to reduce noise and visual interaction with other dogs to increase the level of comfort for your pet

Other important aspects to their living and sleeping accommodation are:

  • Your dog has access to their own sleeping area and toilet at all times.
  • Your dog has access to an area with no other dogs or people if needed.
  • Your dog has access to toys and stimulation.
  • Your dog has their own kennel

5. Does your dog get time outside with plenty of space.  Your dog should get daily exercise – we provide daily exercise throughout the day. Exercise promotes a sense of well being.  They should be allowed to play freely and have plenty of outside stimulation.  Our dogs get out at least 6 times a day. with lots of one-on-one care and attention.  Oh, don’t forget about lots of doggie kisses. Our staff dog ratio is one-on-one! One dog and one human!

6. Look for a visible online reputation and reviews

If you cannot find a digital presence for the dog kennels walk away. Reputable dog boarding kennels will be visible and transparent.

7.  Can they or do they identify and treat kennel stress

A big one from my aspect is kennel stress.  Boarding kennel stress affects many dogs during their stay.  Dogs that display stress should get extra support from the staff.

8. Do they live on site? Many facilities owners aren’t on-site and can’t watch over the dogs 24/7.  Even with camera’s this doesn’t truly give anyone peace of mind.

9. They should make you fill out dog fact or intake form?

There is no way a kennel can properly care for your dog without knowing his temperament and personality.

10. Staff is fully trained and knowledgable about dogs.

Check out the staff and see if there is a large turn over. Are they qualified?

While some boarding dog services may seem more convenient than others, above all else, you want to find a kennel that prioritizes your dog’s comfort and well-being.  Many kennels offer test runs. Some even require them. These trial periods assess many things, such as a dog’s temperament, ability to play with others, and whether they struggle with separation anxiety. While these tests determine whether your dog is well-suited to the facility, it’s also an opportunity to see if your dog will thrive while you’re away.
